Cluster Headaches

Cluster headaches are defined by an extremely painful headache of short duration, where the pain occurs just above the eye and often appears at only one side of the head. The largest population of cluster headache sufferers are males over the age of 40.

The pain of a cluster headache is often described as completely unbearable. Unlike a migraine, the person can appear very agitated, and instead of lying down, the patient often moves around and has trouble lying still. The causes of cluster headaches are not yet well-understood.

Chiropractic treatment of Cluster Headaches

Very little research has been done on the effect of Chiropractic treatment on cluster headaches. Some patients we have treated at Mullumbimby Chiropractic report a decrease in the frequency of cluster headaches after treatment. And yet, unfortunately, results with cluster headaches are by no means guaranteed.

Sinus Headaches

A sinus headache originates when inflammation or pressure builds up in the sinuses of the face. Sinus headaches usually occur when the person is suffering from sinusitis.

The sinuses are hollow chambers that sit behind the facial bones. The largest of these chambers, and that which causes most problems, is the maxillary sinus that sit just behind the cheek bones.

One little annoying quirk of human evolution is that our sinuses are made to drain as if we were still walking around on four legs.

For anybody who suffers from hay fever or milk allergies, sinus headaches are quite common. A hallmark of a sinus headache is the inflammation and tenderness just over the maxillary sinus just below the cheek bones.

Chiropractic Treatment of Sinus Headaches

Treatment of sinus headaches at Mullumbimby Chiropractic will usually concentrate on 3 things.

1. Ensure that the cervical spine is moving correctly

There is a strong relationship between sinus congestion and restrictions in the motion of the upper cervical spine.

2. Free the drainage from the sinus cavities

The facial bones have a lot of  internal movement. Cranial adjustment is an advanced chiropractic technique used at Mullumbimby Chiropractic that seeks to change the relationship of the bones that form the face and skull. The results of a correct cranial adjustment are truly amazing.

3. Attempt to find and eliminate the trigger

This is especially important in the case of allergies. Many people with milk allergies do not realize that they may also be allergic to their soy-based substitute.
