When the annular fibers tear the pressure starts to build at the back of the disc. This is a bit problematic because our spinal chord runs just behind the discs. If the swelling is bad enough it can put pressure on the spinal chord and the nerves as they exit the spine on their way to our arms, legs and organs.
In this situation your Chiropractor can use techniques to reduce the swelling of the disc so that it is less likely to put pressure on the nerve roots. This can involve such things as lying on blocks, prescribing extension exercises and gentle spinal adjustments. With most disc injuries, the sooner we see a patient the better.
When the disc is damaged very badly the annular fibers don’t just bulge and swell, they completely tear, so that the Nucleus Pulposis completely herniates out from being contained by the annular fibers. This is known as a disc herniation.
Fortunately this rarely happens but when it does occur it is extremely painful. The body has a huge inflammatory reaction and the disc, whilst it can become stable again, never fully recovers. Short-term Chiropractic treatment in this situation concentrates more around pain management and re-positioning of the injured disc.
Long-term Chiropractic management focuses on improving the muscular stability and splinting around these injured vertebra so that the muscles in the area can take on a more active role in supporting the injured joint. Although the road may be long even the most serious disc injuries usually settle down as we get older.
