After a successful and productive conference coupled with awesome skiing and a few sneaky Japanese brews…… Brent’s back in the office fresh and ready to go!!

Matthew graduated with a Bachelor of Chiropractic Science and Masters in Chiropractic in 2004, and then spent two years practicing on the Gold Coast before moving to London to pursue an opportunity in one of the UK’s most exclusive practices. Here he treated high profile patients alongside an integrated team of highly regarded medical and allied health professionals.

Drawn back to Australia, Matt returned to private practice and an academia position in Sydney, lecturing and tutoring within Macquarie University’s Chiropractic Master’s Degree program in the fields of orthopaedics, sports chiropractic, spinal rehabilitation and advanced patient management. He also conducted performance training consultation and injury management for local athletes and sporting clubs.

During an informal two-year sabbatical from 2013, Matt furthered his training and education in the field of massage and muscle release therapies before returning to the beautiful Gold Coast where he practices what he refers to as Contemporary Chiropractic Care from The Living Well Studio.

Matt typically takes an evidence-based sports model of chiropractic care, which has been shown to be very effective in treating both athletes and those not so athletically inclined. Matt expects to see improvements quickly and commonly uses techniques such as diversified spinal manipulation, drop table techniques, joint mobilisation, stretch, massage, soft tissues release, cranial therapy, active release technique, stabilisation exercises, Sacro Occipital technique blocking, strength training and athletic performance training.

We would like to welcome Dr Mathew Hamann to Mullumbimby Chiropractic. Mathew is our current Locum Chiro seeing clients 2-5pm Wednesday 7th February and Friday 9th 8am-12pm.
Brent is in Japan 1st February – 13th February and highly recommends and endorses Mathew Hamann to take thorough care of his clients whilst he absent.

We hope you all enjoyed your christmas break and indulgences! We are now open and refreshed ready to help our new and existing clients achieve their goals.

Brent enjoyed time in Sydney over the break with his wife Aya ,son Mahalo and the in laws from Japan. Back on deck and refreshed Brents ready to help you achieve your goals and looks forward to catching up with all of our existing customers this year!

Sheridan worked through the break – We couldn’t drag her away! Committed to helping her clients and always going the extra mile 🙂

(I) , Kirsty spent days on the beach ignoring the notifications and suggestions to exercise on her Fitbit.  Very happy to be back at the office ( I love my job!) and catch up with all the wonderful clients and staff!

If your New year’s resolution list is anything like mine, its along the lines of…1.Become a rockstar , 2.Start exercising, 3. Make a million dollars. Fortunately number 2 is achievable and here are some tips to get started;

 

1. Find a running buddy

Running with a friend will keep you accountable for turning up and not just turning off the alarm clock. It can also make you feel more comfortable when starting out running in public- especially if you have a more unco-ordinated friend than yourself :-). Don’t worry about all the fancy gear and designer outfits, just make sure you have comfortable runners and a dam good sports bra.

 

2. Make it fun

Um yeah…exercise- fun? After a while the routine will become easier and you’ll naturally feel a high and a desire to exercise (apparently). Until these moments, making it a catch up with a friend or a reward system such as a coffee in your active wear at the end, may help motivate and make it “fun” . I am also told group sports are fun too, if you are lucky enough to have friends.

 

3.  Minutes rather than distance

Instead of setting a goal of kms set yourself goals in minutes. For example I run for 60 seconds, vomit , walk for 2mins and repeat .  In all seriousness though, setting goals such as interval running and slowly increasing it will have you running for longer pretty quickly. If your fitter than me (very likely)  getting up and committing to a 30min jog on the beach with your buddy will have you building up fitness, stamina and happy endorphins. Basicly as the slogan says “just do it” throw on some runners and go for a run around the block even if its 5mins to start off with- its still a start!

We are now in an age where hand sanitisers are in every workplace and home,  we are experiencing more resistant strains of bacterias and infections. Most people have built up a tolerance to oral antibiotics making it harder to treat simple infections and the same goes for using an overload of these antibacterial cleaning products in your home.

It has been found that over sterilising your home will create an environment that will produce only the strongest of bacterias whilst also killing off the good bacteria. Overuse can also make hospital sterilisation less effective on the individual living in this environment. It is necessary for natural immunity to build by getting a hands a little dirty. This immunity will help children develop less allergies and sometimes prevent asthma.

In conclusion….use hot soapy water, don’t eat raw chicken off the floor and no need for unnecessarily scrubbing yourself like your going in for brain surgery, is proving suffice, for a healthy immune system to develop within the home.

 

The most common types of bacteria found within the home;

 

Micrococcus- This is a sphere-shaped harmless bacterium. It feeds on dead and decomposing materials, and can cause spoilage of fish.This can also cause human sweat to smell bad.

Found in home– Skin, soil, water, meat products.

 

Staphylococcus-Another sphere-shaped bacterium. This is well known for hospitals but is becoming more common in homes. Referred to commonly as MRSA, this is a particularly drug-resistant strain of bacteria.Staph is found everywhere and does not always result in a infection. Usually found on the skin, this bacteria is able to grow with/without oxygen.

Bacillus- Is a rod-shaped bacterium. Bacillus is a very hardy bacterium, as it has the ability to produce endospores – small, tough structures that can survive adverse conditions. Some species of Bacillus can cause food poisoning, and some can cause illness or infection. 

Found in home- Soil, water and dust

 

Pseudomonas- Is another rod-shaped bacterium. It can be found in ts. It is an opportunistic pathogen, and generally considered a nosocomial infection (gained while in the hospital), as the organism tends only to attack individuals that are immunocompromised. Along with infection, it also has the ability to produce exotoxins. As a general rule, the bacterium will not infect a healthy individual.

Music is an amazing thing that can invoke an array of emotions, memories, be a soulful form of communication, and truly- I believe-The essence of life.

Studies have shown that music used in pain management therapy can be highly effective. Not only a broken heart can be mended by some soulful riffs but also physical injuries too.

 A 2015 review in The Lancet found that people who listened to music before, during, or after surgery experienced less pain and anxiety, compared to patients who did not listen to music.

To conduct the study, researchers looked at data from 73 different trials, involving more than 7,000 patients.

The people who experienced a slightly greater, but nonsignificant, reduction in pain, and needed the least pain medication, were the ones who got to pick their own music.A recent review in
the World Journal of Psychiatry found that music therapy can be an effective treatment for mood disorders related to neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, dementia, stroke, and
multiple sclerosis.After reviewing 25 trials, the researchers concluded that music is a valid therapy to potentially reduce depression and anxiety, as well as to improve mood, self-esteem, and
quality of life.They also noted that no negative side effects were reported in any of the trials, making music a low-risk treatment. -Susan Booth
Music can evoke emotion, help regain memories, stimulate new neural connections, and active attention. While listening to music may bring greater health benefits, creating it can be an effective therapy, too.
